MINNEAPOLIS (February 28, 2023) – Minneapolis City SC is proud to announce that the club has been selected to participate in the inaugural Minnesota Super Cup, a new tournament created to bring together the top Minnesota clubs competing in the “Division 4” national pre-professional and semipro leagues into a single competition.
“The Minnesota Super Cup fills a gap for clubs and fans” said tournament director Jon Martinson. “For clubs, they get meaningful games against top competition with reasonable travel. For fans, they get to see cross-league competition that will rekindle rivalries, create new ones, and help answer the question they are asking: which team is the best in Minnesota?”
Six Minnesota-based clubs were selected from the “Division 4” national pre-professional and semipro leagues, including USL League Two, the National Premier Soccer League, and the United Premier Soccer League, based on their results from previous seasons.
The clubs will compete in a World Cup-style tournament will be held in the summer, concurrent with the national amateur leagues’ seasons.
“We can’t wait for this competition to start” said Matt VanBenschoten, General Manager. “The splintered soccer landscape has made it difficult to bring clubs at this level together in a meaningful competition. Now we have it. The fight for state-wide bragging rights is on.”
The full field of teams and the competition schedule will be unveiled in coming weeks on mnsupercup.com and on Twitter.
